The IFFO Marine Raw Material Organization China Cloud Forum was held from November 29 to 30, 2022, to discuss the latest insight into the market trend of fish meal and fish oil, and paid special attention to the markets in China, Peru, Mexico and Europe.
At the opening ceremony of the Cloud Forum, Mr. Peter Martin Johannesen, President of IFFO Marine Raw Materials Agency, said that marine raw materials play an important role in supporting the development of aquaculture industry and are the most effective way to produce protein. Half of the raw materials have been certified for responsible procurement. Ms. Xu Yao, Director of IFFO Marine Raw Materials Agency in China, emphasized the ability of the marine raw materials industry to contribute to the future food supply safety of mankind. Based on the data of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and IFFO in 2020, marine raw materials contributed 7 kg of fish food production to everyone in the world. It is estimated that by 2030, 30 million to 40 million tons of aquatic feed will be added globally.
An industry with strong adaptability
Dr. Enrico Bacis, director of IFFO market research, believes that the marine raw material industry has strong adaptability: the production of fish meal in 2021 will be slightly higher than 5 million tons, while the production of fish oil will be 1.2 million tons, which is basically the same as in previous years. The marine raw material industry can maximize the use of precious raw materials: about 30% of the raw materials used in the world come from by-products. Mr. Jon Tarleb ø, chief sales officer of TripleNine, said that in the past few years, the output of fishmeal in Europe was about 600000 tons, a large part of which came from salmon scraps.
Well managed fisheries
Dr. Brett Glencross, IFFO technical director, mentioned that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization announced in early 2022 that 65% of the world's fish stocks were considered to be well managed, and they accounted for more than 80% of the global fishery biomass. Recent studies have clearly shown that the implementation of effective fisheries management can definitely achieve the recovery of fish stocks. Mr. James Frank, Managing Director of MSICeres, introduced Peru's fish meal and fish oil industry. There are 82 factories (industrial factories and by-product factories) in Peru. The Peruvian authorities set a quota of 2.283 million tons for anchovy and white anchovy in the central and northern part of the country in the second fishing season on November 23, 2022, accounting for 33% of the biomass. "This quota indicates that the biomass is good," said Dr. Bailiko.
Excellent nutritional characteristics
Dr. Ge Bailuan pointed out that fish meal and fish oil have unique value. Fish oil contains unique and abundant EPA and DHA. Fish meal has a nearly perfect balance of amino acids, and also contains bioactive factors. Ms. Yu Chengping of Aker Marine Life Company conducted in-depth research on Antarctic krill powder. She introduced that krill powder is a combination of important nutrients for fish and shrimp growth and health.
Focus on Asia
Dr. Bailiko explained that China and other parts of Asia provide more than 80% of the world's farmed fish. These cultured fish consume 70% of the marine raw materials used in aquaculture, but only 30% of the fish oil used in aquaculture feed. Speaking of China, Dr. Zhang Wenbo, associate professor of Shanghai Ocean University, pointed out that China is the largest aquaculture producer in the world, accounting for about 60% of the global aquaculture output.
Dr. Fan Xia, executive deputy director of the National Feed Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Beijing), said that China is a big consumer of fish meal. However, domestic fishmeal production is low, and high-quality feed fishmeal mainly depends on imports. She stressed that "strengthening the safety access and risk assessment of fish meal is of great significance for promoting the healthy development of feed production and animal husbandry and aquaculture in China".
Focus on Mexico
Mr. Armando Coppel of Maz Industrial said that Mexico's catch accounted for 1.35% of the world's total catch. The country's small-scale pelagic fishery began in the northwest coast in the 20th century, and then moved to Sinaloa in 1972. At present, there are 94 operating vessels in Mexico's small pelagic fishery, with the catch of less than 750000 tons/year.
